Nix is sexy

New VPS and the troubles

The past few weeks, I’ve been configuring a VPS I’ve rented from the guys at ARP Networks. This post isn’t supposed to be a plug for their excellent service and value, but let me just mention they actually have a channel onĀ freenode. How great is that?

Anyway, on a VPS you should do anything you can to minimize resource usage – because it’s just nicer that way. This was a good chance for me to scrap apache httpd, which in all honesty is a bit like the Hummer of web servers. Figure out the perfect analogy yourself, apache is heavy.

There are, as I understand, two primary choices. nginx and lighttpd.

One of them is needlessly inflexible and complex, the other is simple and flexible but is being ruined by community-related issues. Which should I pick? How does one pick between semantical hell and a school yard?
